Night works start on Malaga’s busy A-357 road after regional investment

Malaga’s A-357 busy road is now closed at night after regional investment

There’s no point in waiting for the Ministry of Transport. Andalucian Regional Government has begun surface renewal work on the A-357, one of Malaga’s main routes, to end the daily danger of potholes, cracks, and other road hazards. With a €3 million outlay, actions cover ten kilometres of this road in both directions, towards Malaga and Campillos, under the regional asphalting programme for autonomous roads. This road is not controlled by the Ministry of Transport of the central government and is therefore paid for directly by the Junta de Andalucia.

This week, work began on the carriageway leading to Campillos. Specifically, the section between Malaga City and the Malaga Tech Park. The high traffic volume, which averages around 74,000 cars per day, has forced planners into scheduling all activities at night. This reduces disruption for drivers and allows teams to upgrade in a comfortable temperature for workers.

During construction, temporary lane reductions are implemented to keep workers safe and traffic moving along one of Andalucia’s most busy corridors. Regional minister for public works and mobility Mario Muñoz-Atanet explained that this stretch was selected first because the A-357 ranks among the highest-traffic accesses across the whole of Andalucia, not only Malaga province. The money will be used to improve the road’s safety and comfort for users.

Additional Mobility Projects Already Underway

These surface works are in addition to recent mobility schemes along the same corridor. One completed scheme delivered a new BUS-VAO lane for entry into Malaga either by bus, taxi, or cars with more than one occupant, at a cost of €8.5 million. Another project has started converting a further section of the A-357 between Casapalma and Cerralba into full motorway standard, backed by €51 million.

The wider regional asphalting programme totals €151.5 million across Andalucia, of which €17.5 million is earmarked for Malaga province alone.

Surface and safety improvements rid potholes

The tasks include replacing worn out pavements, replacing the surface layer with a new one, strengthening the lower road courses, installing bituminous mixtures, sealing the pavements, replacing horizontal road markings and beaconing, as well as renewing the road markings.

The A-357 corridor is important

A-357 is the road that connects Malaga’s inland villages to the city. It runs 69 kilometers and reaches the coast. The A-357’s alignment begins near Campillos and passes through the Guadalhorce Reservoir area. It then continues to the Hoya de Malaga, the lower Guadalhorce Valley and joins the A-7.

Surface renewal is part a larger package of actions that strengthens this vital link used every day by thousands and that improves the connections between Malaga’s metropolitan area and the provincial interior.
