Spain is about to go from cold rain to tropical nights and temperatures of 34C.

This week, many people across Spain reached for jackets or umbrellas. Some parts of Spain experienced heavy rains almost every day. In the Pyrenees, fresh snow fell after a blast of cold air from the north. In Catalunya, Galicia, Cantabria and Castilla y León, the weather felt far more like early spring than the second half of May.

The forecast has suddenly changed.

According to AemetSpain may be entering its warmest weather stretch so far this season, as temperatures are expected to spike sharply by the middle of next weekend. In some areas of the country thermometers could reach 32C or even 34C. Forecasters warn that southern areas may experience their first tropical nights, with temperatures above 20C.

After weeks with unpredictable weather, the switch should happen quite quickly.

Rainy weather in Spain has finally started to subside

This spring has been a particularly unpredictable one for many.

Then suddenly, temperatures drop again and storms arrive. Mountain areas wake up to snow. Then, suddenly, temperatures drop again. Storms come and mountains are covered in snow.

Aemet predicts that the hotter conditions will arrive on Wednesday, May 20. This is especially true for the southern half and northeastern parts of the peninsula where temperatures could exceed 32C or 34C.

As soon as the sun returns, it is likely that the beaches, terraces, and outdoor areas will fill up quickly.

The weather is unpredictable and many people are feeling a little tired.

It’s still unusually warm at the end of this month

At this time, the forecasts indicate the pattern of warmer weather may also continue into the final weeks of May.

Although there is some uncertainty about how temperatures and rain will develop later in the month in Spain, current predictions continue to point towards above-average heat.

While isolated localised showers are still possible, it is unlikely that widespread rain will occur as in the last week.

Unsettled conditions can last a little bit longer in Catalunya than anywhere else.

Meteocat warns that Monday may still bring showers to parts of Barcelona, Girona and the inland. Even in those areas, weather conditions are expected to stabilize quickly from Tuesday as high pressure returns.

This sudden change in weather is not unusual for Spain’s late spring. Even so, a sudden temperature change from cold rain to 34C in a matter of days is certainly something that gets people talking.
