A 17-YEAR-OLD girl died on Monday from meningitis after being admitted to Denia Hospital with ‘symptoms compatible’ with the disease.
After the test results were released on Tuesday, the cause of death was confirmed.
The Marina Alta Department of Health has activated protocols to detect meningitis. They have also been tracking the teen’s contacts in recent times.

All those who have come into contact with her are given chemoprophylaxis – an antibiotic – to protect them from getting bacterial meningitis.
Meningitis spreads mainly through respiratory secretions such as coughing or sneezing.
The victim was from Benissa, and a huge basketball fan.
She and some school friends went to Valencia’s Roig Arena to watch a match on Saturday.
The girl had already started to feel unwell, but she put the symptoms down to a cold.
She had a bad sleep and woke up with spots on her skin on Sunday.
The teenager first went to Benissa Health Centre and then was transferred via ambulance to Denia Hospital ICU.
She died on Monday at about midday.
People who knew her described the girl as ‘cheerful and affectionate’.
