Spain is about see a dramatic change in the The weather. After several days with mild and calm conditions, this weekend a powerful Atlantic Front followed by an influx of Polar Air is expected to hit Spain. It will bring heavy rains to the Balearic Islands in the Northeast and snow to many parts of Northern Spain.

Spain’s national weather agency AEMET Alerts have been issued in various regions to prepare for the sudden change. The weekend may feel like winter to many expats and residents who are used to the stable weather of recent months.

The system will begin to affect the country on Saturday, 14th March when an Atlantic Front crosses the Iberian Peninsula allowing colder air to move southwards from the north.

Snow and heavy rain expected in northern Spain

Forecasts indicate that the arrival of an Atlantic front will cause widespread rain across the Balearic Islands and northern Spain, with some regions facing especially intense conditions.

Asturias will be the region that sees the heaviest rainfall, followed by Cantabria and northeastern Catalonia. The Balearic Islands are also expected to receive heavy rain. These areas could see persistent rain, sometimes heavy with thunderstorms and small hail.

As the colder air comes behind the front, Snow Snow will begin to fall over the mountainous areas of northern Spain.

Snow levels will start off the day in the northern regions at 800-1,000 metres. The snow level could fall further as the temperatures drop. This is especially true in the east.

Snowfall in the Pyrenees, and other high areas of the peninsula’s northern half is likely.

Although most of the snowfall will be in the mountains, other areas may see less accumulations, or wintry weather.

Winds increase as polar air rushes towards Spain

Strong winds will be a feature of the weather this weekend, along with rain and snow.

The northwesterly wind is expected to intensify in the Balearic Islands and on the Peninsula. There are some areas that will likely experience strong gusts.

The Ebro valley could experience powerful cierzos, known to cause sharp temperature drops and create difficult travel conditions.

Further east, the Empordà region of Catalonia and northern parts of the Balearic Islands may be affected by strong tramontana winds.

Forecasters warn of strong west winds in southern coastal areas around the Strait of Gibraltar, the Alboran Sea and other nearby regions.

Conditions can be gusty even in the inland, especially in areas near mountains and Mediterranean coastal zones.

For many people Spain is a great place to liveWind, rain, and colder air combined with coastal regions will make the weather change more noticeable.

Temperatures to plummet across the nation

This sudden change in weather will be characterized by a rapid drop in temperatures.

AEMET warns of a significant drop in maximum daytime temperatures across the Balearic Islands and many parts on the Peninsula. The most dramatic change is expected to occur in the northeastern part of Spain.

The fall in temperatures can be described as spectacular, especially when compared to earlier mild weather conditions.

There will be variations in the minimum temperatures, but they will not change. In the northeastern region, temperatures may drop slightly overnight. However, in parts of southwest Spain they will remain milder.

After several days of springlike weather, expats who live along the Mediterranean coastline or in the inland regions may find the sudden change to be jarring.

What expats in Spain can expect

For the large international communities living across Spain – particularly in areas such as Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands and northern coastal regions – the forecast means a weekend of much cooler and more unsettled conditions.

Snowfall can affect travel routes and roads for those living in the mountains.

The strong winds and cooler temperatures can make outdoor activities less enjoyable, even in coastal areas.

This type of abrupt shift is common in Spain during late winter. When the Atlantic weather system passes through the peninsula, it can sometimes bring cold air masses down from northern Europe.

Canary Islands – Now and Then

Canary Islands are experiencing a warmer climate than the mainland.

The trade winds continue to influence the islands. alisios. The winds can sometimes become stronger, causing strong gusts.

Forecasters also expect the calima – the Saharan dust haze that recently affected the islands – to gradually weaken.

The northern mountains of the islands may see some light rain, but the conditions in general are not expected as severe as they were for mainland Spain.

Reminder that winter hasn’t finished

This weekend’s weather forecast in Spain is a stark reminder that even after several days without snow, the winter season can suddenly return.

Arrival of polar air in the Atlantic Front will bring strong winds along the coast, and snow to the northern mountains.

For residents and expats alike, the best advice for the weekend is simple: keep an eye on weather updates, prepare for colder conditions and expect a return to winter – at least for a few days.
