The Mancomunidad of the Costa Tropical (Costa Tropical Community) has launched a coordinated plan to prevent the repeat of the faecal contamination at Carchuna in 2025.

Officials have increased surveillance around La Perla near Motril following a high-level meeting of regional authorities.

Health authorities in July 2025 were forced by routine water sampling to restrict swimming after high levels of bacteria were detected. The move sparked concern over the public’s health and local tourist industry.

While the Carchuna wastewater facility is operating correctly and in compliance with the environmental regulations, the Mancomunidad confirms that last year’s accident led to immediate limitations.

The authorities now focus their efforts on preventing external incidents which may sometimes affect the quality and safety of water.

Rafael Caballero emphasized that “joint responsibility is needed” to maintain the quality of water.

Caballero said, “We’re taking steps to strengthen our prevention mechanisms in order to prevent new situations that could affect public health as well as the development of tourist season.”

It is the goal to maintain all bathing areas within acceptable health parameters until 2026. This will ensure safety for residents as well as visitors of Granada’s coast.
