The Costa del Sol authorities are realizing that leisure time on the beach should not be limited to just half the year. Instead, they need to provide outdoor spaces for sports, fresh air and enjoyment all year round.

Gran Parque Costa del Sol in Las Lagunas de Mijas will open its doors to the public by 2025. This 27-hectare park is roughly the same size as 38 standard football fields. Torremolinos now has its own “gran parque” Also on a massive level.

Margarita Del Cid, the mayor of Torremolinos announced recently plans to transform the former illegal landfill site into a healthy and public space. The “last major urban dump in Andalucia” will be transformed into a large suburban park with family-friendly recreational areas, as well as an outdoor auditorium to host large-scale events and concerts.

Torremolinos: a former dump will be turned into a public park with eco-friendly features

The 52,300 square metre site at the foothills of the mountains operated without permits between 1990 and 2011, accumulating 1.6 million cubic meters of waste. Sealing works, funded with around €7 million and involving the relocation of nearly 684,000 cubic metres of rubbish plus the planting of over 75,000 shrubs for decontamination, were completed by late summer 2025. It is not possible to classify the land as “urbanisable”, and suitable for real estate development, due to the history of the dump and the potential contamination in the soil.

Del Cid has now been in office for four years and described the project as “regenerative”. The aim is to create a new green lung, a recreational area, and a large recreational space. The park will be a major attraction along the Costa del Sol. It will complement recent openings such as the Gran Parque, which is a few kilometers down the road.

The mayor highlighted this transformation as part broader urban renewal initiatives, highlighting public-private partnership and strategic planning for funding infrastructure. This ambitious redevelopment transforms a longstanding environmental eyesore, into a vibrant asset for the community that will provide outdoor enjoyment year-round.
