Torremolinos installs new speed camera on Avenida de la Libertad to combat high accident rate

The local police in Torremolinos are using a deterrent radar to reduce speeding at the notorious blackspot roundabout.

In order to make Avenida Libertad safer, the local authority is planning to install a deterrent camera. The device will be used to target the stretch of road between El Pozuelo and La Marcha Verde, an area plagued with frequent accidents.

Why Torremolinos needs this speed camera on Avenida de la Libertad

This decision was made after many years of high accident numbers in the area. Police reports in the area state that the straight section invites drivers to speed up above the limit. This creates a “tunnel” effect that affects the perception of road signs. Many crashes occur when vehicles hit speed bumps unexpectedly, losing control and colliding with the roundabout – in some cases, launching cars like a catapult over the roundabout.

Residents have voiced their concerns since the beginning, especially following incidents when vehicles crossed pedestrian walkways, entered gardens, and even parked in parking lots.

How and when the new speed cameras will work

The device will operate primarily on Friday and Satuday nights. This coincides with the peak hours for drunk driving accidents, between 2am and 5.am. It may also activate during special DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) campaigns, with advance notice via council social media.

Near the roundabout, it drops to 30 km/h. According to studies, the majority of crashes involve alcohol or drug-impaired drivers who are speeding.

Torremolinos road safety measures

The speed cameras build on previous safety improvements such as road resurfacing, repainting and speed bump relocation. They also include a traffic light which flashes in red when speeding is excessive. The steps taken are intended to discourage drivers. dangerous driving Protect the community of this bustling Costa del Sol city.

Soon the council will announce an exact date of activation. Torremolinos drivers are encouraged to obey speed limits and safer roads.
