Estepona’s restored San Luis Castle a resounding success

Estepona’s restored San Luis Castle is a success

Castillo de San Luis celebrated its first anniversary as a municipal exhibit centre by welcoming over 34,500 visitors. This impressive number highlights the growing interest for the city’s historical and cultural heritage, and confirms the castle as a landmark in the identity of the city.

Restorative and recovery

Estepona Town Hall recently completed an ambitious restoration of the 16th century coastal fortress. The fortress had been largely unoccupied for almost a hundred years before. The restoration project began with the acquisition of adjacent properties which had covered the ruins. This was followed by the careful clearing of vegetation, stabilisation structures and archaeological excavations. The site has been transformed into a culturally rich, accessible and educational attraction.

A modern walkway allows visitors to explore the castle and observe the remains from various historical periods. Site displays an impressive collection of artefacts discovered during excavations. These include ceramics, artillery, religious items, and even shelters from the Spanish Civil War. Informational panels and audiovisuals enhance the interpretation of the castle, and are suitable for people of all ages.

Education and Cultural Impact

The site is a popular destination for both locals and tourists from around the world. It also plays a vital educational role by hosting many school groups during the year. Daniel García, Estepona’s Councillor for Historic Heritage, emphasised that the castle’s reopening strengthens its role in the city’s cultural identity and opens opportunities for further interpretive activities, events, and educational programmes.

Castillo de San Luis was originally built to protect the southern walls of the city in the 16th century. It became a cannon-battery in the 18th. Despite being damaged by the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, and French demolitions from 1812, Estepona’s fortifications still offer an interesting glimpse into its rich history.
