Community says resounding “YES” to life for Leonor – objective achieved

El Vuelo de la Libeluas in Benalmadena, which is dedicated to the poor of the town, has reached an impressive milestone within a very short period of time.

With the help of the community, shops, bars, the public, and even those who could not afford to donate, they have managed to help Milena, mother of Leonor, the 14-year-old local resident, raise €40,000 for life-saving treatment.

Leonor, a brave girl who has a brain tumor lodged in an area of the brain that is impossible to operate, will now be able to receive treatment in Germany. This will hopefully encapsulate and stop the tumour from growing, allowing Leonor to lead a healthy and full life. The treatment uses a vaccine that is only available to Germans and Swiss. Maria from El Vuelo de la Libeluas commented, “I cannot believe that in the modern age, you must pay to save the life of a young child.” However, this is the case as the treatment does not apply to children who are on social security.

Only by working together can a community achieve a complex treatment

Immunotherapy, developed over the last two decades has been able to penetrate the blood-brain barriers and encapsulate tumors in order to slow their growth. Patients have seen their survival time increase from 6 to 18 month to 8 to 10 years in clinical trials. However, trials are limited to adults over 18, leaving families like Milena’s to cover the full €40,000 cost. Friends, family members and the Costa del Sol Community have generously donated and achieved the goal.

El Vuelo de la Libeluas wrote late Wednesday, November 12, “The Flight of the Dragonflies has met; we have done the count, and … we couldn’t be happier! With Yes to life for Leonor“, we demonstrate that when people are brought together, love is created. Interwoven strengths of the soul are accomplished, despite difficult goals. Many thanks to everyone who has made this story possible. It is a great gift to help a girl survive. Thank you! “The first part of treatment has been achieved.”

We wish Leonor and Milena all the best as they fly to Germany. We all root for you.
