‘If released he’d just do it again’: Costa del Sol karate coach accused of abusing children as young as six is refused bail

A KARATE instructor accused of sexually abusing students was placed in detention before trial without bail by a Malaga Court after it deemed that there was a high risk of him reoffending.

Lorenzo Marin, an ex-selector of junior national karate, was arrested late in August by the Policia Nacional amid allegations that he repeatedly sexually assaulted four students between the ages of six and fifteen.

Earlier this week, Malaga’s provincial court threw out an appeal from the defence and confirmed that Marin, 70, would be refused bail amid fears that ‘if released, he could repeat this type of conduct’.

The judges were also concerned that Marin might use bail in an attempt to influence his victim and undermine the judicial system.

In response, the defence argued that the accused had been working with minors ‘for more than 20 years without ever having received a complaint, claim or disciplinary action’.

Lorenzo Marin was arrested in late August for the alleged crimes.

They also noted that Marin was retired and his son ran the karate clubs, saying that there were no risks of evidence being destroyed or escaping.

The court ruled that pre-trial detention was legal and constitutional.

The case was made public when the mother one of the four young accusers contacted Malaga’s Redime Association. A charity that supports young people who are victims of sexual assault.

Marin is accused by at least four children between the ages of six and fifteen years of sexual abuse.

According to testimonies of the victims, the alleged abuse occurred during training camps or sessions prior to karate championships.
