The Guardia Civil intercepted him at the CV-912 for Almoradi & Dolores.

Although the incident took place on October 18, details of it were only revealed on Thursday.

He was negative for drugs and alcohol.

He was not identified as a local or tourist.

Ansur, the concession holder of AP-7, contacted the authorities at 10.45pm regarding this errant driver.

Road users fearing for their lives phoned the 112 emergency number to report the ‘kamikaze’ driver.

Guardia patrols were sent from Orihuela to Torrevieja to stop the elderly Briton’s journey. They also wanted to avoid a collision with motorists on the southbound carriageway.

Around 11pm, he was located by patrol vehicles who used flashing lights to try and get him to stop.

The man refused to stop, despite their loudspeaker appeals.

He continued to the north before the Guardia Civil stopped him on the CV-912.

The Guardia has stressed the importance to always drive with extreme caution, and to obey road signs – especially near highway entrances and exits – in order to avoid a situation similar to this one which could have resulted in fatalities.
