Benalmádena walking footballers show age is no barrier to the beautiful game

Benalmádena’s Walking Football Spain team has once again shown that age is no obstacle when it comes to sport and staying fit.

Five of the most senior members of the club took to the pitch last week. Their combined age was more than 400 and they brought plenty of talent to the match.

Fred, Geoff, Dave (known by teammates as “Boris”) were all 79 years old. They were joined by Ken (82) who played his last match before taking a well-deserved break, and Walter (83), whose final match was played just prior to a well deserved break. All five of them will be 80 years old within the next 12 months, proving sport and camaraderie have no expiration date.

Walking Football Spain, based in Benalmádena, continues to grow in popularity across the Costa del Sol. The club was founded in 2017 and welcomes all those over 50. It offers a slower version of traditional football to improve balance, health, and social connections. The focus is on inclusion and enjoyment, not competition. This helps participants to stay active and social in later life.

Spanish health organizations, such as the Ministry of Health in Spain, have conducted research that highlights the importance of community sports for an ageing population. Walking football and other moderate exercises can reduce the risk for heart disease, increase joint mobility, and improve mental health. The friendly and social atmosphere helps to combat loneliness, which is a major problem among seniors and retirees.

Walking football was born in the UK, but is now popular throughout Spain. It has gained popularity amongst expats as well as locals along the Costa del Sol. Session are now held in many towns, including Mijas Estepona Fuengirola. They are often associated with local councils or health initiatives that promote active ageing.

Organisers in Benalmádena hope to celebrate their octogenarian milestone next year by fielding both their oldest and youngest players in the same match, showcasing the sport’s inclusive spirit.
