Officials warned that the system could bring ‘very heavy accumulations’ of rain and even “locally torrential downpours”, with the situation made worse by the persistence of rainfall that could slow down water drainage.

An orange alert remains in place for most of the region – including the coast of Castellón, the southern coast and inland areas of Valencia, and the northern coast of Alicante. A yellow rain and storm warning is in effect for the rest.

Emergency officials have warned local councils to be alert as heavy rain is expected to continue through the weekend, and possibly even into Monday.

“Stay home if you can”

Juan Carlos Valderrama (regional minister of emergencies and interior) called for extreme caution after a meeting to coordinate the response, particularly in areas that are prone for flooding. He announced that emergency teams would continue to be deployed in Vega Baja – one of the areas most affected by DANA storms.

Valderrama said that there is a great deal of uncertainty as to where the most intense rains will fall. “That is why we are keeping the preventive action active in Vega Baja. We ask everyone to be alert.”

He warned that even though they may appear dry, ravines and riverbeds could flood suddenly. Residents were also advised to not drive unless it was absolutely necessary and to avoid parking or crossing near flood-prone zones.

Overnight the heaviest rainfall hit Vega Baja and Marina Alta before moving to L’Horta Nord, Ribera Alta & Baixa. Towns such as Almussafes & Alginet saw some of the most intense downpours.

Overnight, hundreds of incidents were handled

Since the start of the weather episode, emergency services have already received 392 incident reports – including 222 in Alicante, 160 in Valencia, and 10 in Castellón.

Authorities are also maintaining a special monitoring unit in the ‘ground zero’ areas most affected by previous DANA storms, where drainage systems are already struggling with the latest rainfall.

Emergency services urge the public not to travel unless absolutely necessary and to prioritize their safety. With more rain expected through Monday, residents across Valencia, Alicante and Castellón are being told to stay home whenever possible – and be ready for a long, wet weekend.
