MADRID Airport will be the first airport in Spain to implement the new European biometric border control system, also known as Entry-Exit System for non-EU Citizens.
It is a low-key launch, with only one flight in the morning to the airport of the capital.
The EES database will be required for all UK visitors to Spain.

British citizens residing in Spain do not have to register if they possess their TIE card.
By April, every airport will have booths at which non-EU residents entering or departing the country will validate their passports – including their biometric information.
The system will also make sure that non-EU citizens, including those in the UK, don’t violate rules about maximum lengths of stay.
Juan Manuel Valle said that the Central Border Unit of the Policia Nacional will be more effective at fighting illegal immigration.
He said that the EES network will allow any country to access traveller data including incidents or rejections at any border ‘in real time’.
Manuel Valle said that the database would be shared with other European institutions and be overseen by them.
The implementation of EES in all EU member states will be complete by 10 April, allowing for the new automated system that eliminates the traditional manual stamping of passports within the Schengen Area.
The system will be introduced in phases at Spanish border crossings. First, it will be at airports and then land borders.
Spain’s Interior Ministry said that EES is intended to modernise border management to make travel ‘safer, smoother, and more efficient’ by reducing waiting times at passport control through the introduction of automated border booths.
The Ministry has added that the ESS System remains the exclusive responsibility for the National Police at all Spanish borders crossings and the Guardia Civil continues to perform fiscal protection duties.
