Police investigate whether Italian mafia killed two men, including a gang leader, in the same area of Spain

The Guardia Civil is investigating whether the Italian Mafia was involved in two murders that occurred on Tuesday, both in the Murcia region.

Giulian Velo was shot to death outside his house in the remote El Cantal district in Lorca by a group hooded individuals.

The property was isolated and he lived there with his mother.

A CRIME SCENE

Velo, an alleged mafia and drug trafficker, moved to Spain more than 30 years ago.

He had been previously charged, but acquitted, of murdering in the region in Aguilas as well as further south at Malaga.

The other victim, found a few hours later, was in the trunk of a vehicle in Lorca’s Ramonete area.

He was handcuffed, and the Guardia Civil tried to identify him to see if he knew Velo.

So far, no arrests have taken place.

Giulian Velos was released on bail following a year of detention after he was accused of being the leader in a group that provided boats for transporting hashish.

He was released during the summer of 2024.

Velo has long been suspected of having links to the ‘Mala de Brenta’ mafia crew and was an alleged leader of one of the organisation’s branches.

In 1999 he was investigated by Malaga police for possible involvement in double murder, but was cleared because of a lack evidence.

Police arrested him in Guadalentin of Murcia after they seized 2,600 kg of marijuana plants.

Velo was sentenced for eight years in prison, but he took advantage after six years of his prison leave to flee from Spain.

The murder of Giuseppe Nirta, an Italian in Aguilas, coincided with his departure.

He was suspected to be involved in the murder and arrested in Albania. He was then extradited back to Spain.

Velo was later acquitted for the murder of Nirta.
