Wildfire on A7 in Estepona

Wildfire on A7 near Estepona

A sudden fire broke in the median of Estepona’s A-7 highway on Thursday, October 7, sending smoke plumes into the skies and jamming traffic along one the Costa del Sol’s busiest routes.

The fire broke out at 10.55am close to Palacio de Congresos near the junction between the A-7 and AP-7. Local authorities were urged to act quickly.

The firefighters (Consorcio Provincial de Bomberos – CPB de Malaga) dispatched a team to tackle the fire, which was confined to overgrown grass in the motorway median. The incident has caused significant disruption, even though no injuries have been reported or structures damaged. Both the left lane on the A-7 towards Cadiz, and the right lane on the AP-7 as well as the Estepona exit off the AP-7 near the Palacio de Congresos were closed. Emergency crews were working to contain the fires, causing long delays for drivers.Ana Morales, an irate commuter stuck in traffic, said: “It was chaos at first.” “The smoke and flames were thick. You could see them from afar.” “Everyone just wanted to make it through safely.” The cause is still being investigated, but the dry conditions in the area and the high temperatures could have been a factor. Estepona saw a series of minor fires over the past few weeks. These included a fire involving mattresses on September 29, and a container on September 25, among others.

Authorities urge caution during the ongoing dry season. Early afternoon, firefighters were making progress with the fire, but officials warned drivers to avoid the region and follow the detour signs. CPB Malaga, 112 Andalucia and the emergency service provided information via social media to keep residents informed.
