New chapter for Age Concern, new community hub

Age Concern launches a new chapter and a new community hub

Age Concern Fuengirola, Mijas & Benalmadena are undergoing a transformative phase, opening a new chapter in their history, and closing their Los Boliches charity shop to prioritise a new community centre.

A new lease on the old premises, as well as an increase in rent and parking were all issues. It was just time to put resources into a brand new, better community hub.

The decision was announced at the annual general assembly. It is a result of rising operating costs, declining foot traffic and donations, as well as online competition. The shop has been a major revenue source for the past decade. Soon, it will be replaced with a social centre, which will host wellbeing activities and CPR, CPR workshops and dementia awareness.

Linda Ewen, the president of the charity, highlighted its growth to more than 300 members. However she said that there was a decline in volunteerism after Brexit. The new centre, which will be opened in November, will help to further their mission of helping older adults. It will do this by providing fresh volunteer opportunities as well as services tailored to local needs. A new drop-in center is also planned to open in Mijas Pueblo. More information will be released soon. Keep an eye on this page for more information.

Age Concern, in partnership with Save a Life has partnered up to further the health of communities. A masquerade gala dinner will be held on October 31, at El Chaparral Golf in Mijas. Tickets, priced at €55, include cava, canapés, a three-course dinner, drinks, and live entertainment by Tony Whitehouse and Liam Grey. The funds will be used to purchase defibrillators for S.A.L. and register them on OpenAEDMap. They will also receive free CPR training and first aid instruction. There are sponsorship opportunities available. Please contact Michelle Greenwood on 619 792 7.
