Between 2018 and 2023, mental health was the second most common cause of absenteeism at work in Spain.
According to a study by Umivale Activa, the Valencian Institute of Economic Research and Umivale Activa, localised pain such as neck and back problems remained the primary reason for sick leave.
For salaried employees, pain and mental health accounted for 51.1% and for self-employed people 49% respectively.

Over two-thirds (or more) of the rise in absenteeism was due to them between 2018 and 2023.
The second largest cause of sickness leave was mental illness, which surpassed trauma injuries in terms of percentage growth.
The study revealed a drastic 88% increase in lost days of work in 2023 as compared to 2018, due to mental problems. This figure fell to 75% in the case of self-employed workers.
The reasons for the increase were not provided, but it was acknowledged that the Covid-19 epidemic and lockdowns played a major role in the increased reporting of mental illness cases.
According to a Spanish survey, it is the most common reason for workers taking sick leave under 30 years old and second behind pain complaints among those older than that age.
The mental health of young women aged between 20 and 29 is a cause for 30 percent of the lost days.
The most absenteeism was seen among those in administrative and managerial roles.
