World Cup winner and Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets announces retirement from football

Sergio Busquets retires from football after winning the World Cup and being a legend of Barcelona.

Sergio Busquets will retire from football at the end of the Major League Soccer Season (MLS) in December.

The 38-year old is widely regarded as the greatest midfielder of all time. He has been with the Catalan giants for 18 years after joining their youth ranks at the age of 15.

He made a whopping 722 appearances for Barca – the third most in the club’s history – winning 32 trophies, including nine La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey trophies, and three UEFA Champions Leagues.

He made 143 Spanish appearances and was an integral part of the team that won the 2010 World Cup, and the 2012 European Championship.

Busquets, a legendary midfielder for both club and country who was renowned as a superb reader of the sport with an unsurpassed temperament, played alongside fellow legends Xavi & Andres Iniesta.

Underrated by many, former national team manager Vicente del Bosque famously said of the 6ft 3in Spaniard: “If you watch the whole game, you won’t see Busquets – but watch Busquets, and you will see the whole game.”

Busquets joined up with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi (who he played alongside), Jordi alba and Luis Suarez, at Inter Miami. Inter Miami is owned by David Beckham, former England footballer.

In a video that was posted on social networks, an emotional Busquets stated: “It feels like it’s time to say goodbye to my professional career as a footballer.” It’s almost been 20 years since I first dreamed about this amazing story.

He continued: “I’m leaving very proud, happy, fulfilled and most importantly, grateful.” “Thank you very much and see you soon!”

Busquets final campaign will be Inter Miami’s MLS playoffs. They begin on October 22, and conclude with the MLS Cup in December.

Inter Miami is currently the 11/2 favourite to win the title.
