Jan Virgili should be on your mind. The 19 year old winger was born and raised in Vilassar, Barcelona.
Virgili stepped out onto the pitch on September 21 against Atletico Madrid and changed the mood in Son Moix instantly. Mallorca had struggled through a tough game until that point: weak in defence, held back by Diego Simeone’s men and trailing due to Gallagher’s strike.
But then came the teenager who only this summer swapped the Barcelona B team for Mallorca in a €3.5 million deal, signing a five-year contract.
The left-winger instantly showed something new: confidence and speed, as well as a passion for the game that the home crowd was desperate to witness. Fans leaned forward every time he touched a ball. He dribbled like nothing and made a perfect pass for Muriqi, who headed home the equaliser. The stadium erupted with joy after the goal.
Jan Virgili was the surprise hero when the final whistle blew. The score was 1-1. Local newspapers compared him with Lamine Yamal while fans left the stadium buzzing over their new favourite youngster. His performance was a spark for RCD Mallorca who were near the bottom of their table.
Virgili’s still a raw talent, but he is already proving himself on the pitch. His story could lead to a brighter future, for both himself and the team.
