Life-saving initiative with Lions’ “Message in a Bottle”

Lions “Message in a Bottle: A Life-saving Initiative”

The Lions of La Cala de Mijas came up with a brilliant idea to help residents who are on medication or have medical conditions they should inform emergency services about in the event of a medical emergency.

Inevitably, as we age, certain medical conditions will arise that doctors and ambulance teams may ask about. Some people living on the Costa del Sol may be alone in a medical crisis or have no family members nearby.

Lion’s Message is a simple-to-use bottle

Enter the Lion’s initiative “Message in Bottle”. In an emergency, the basic system allows for easy access to medical and personal data stored in the refrigerator. Local ambulance staff are trained to recognize stickers placed on front doors that indicate medical staff need to check the fridge. They will find inside a small plastic transparent jar a form that has been filled out with information about the owner’s medical history and any medications they are taking. For example, if someone has diabetes, they may be suffering from a “hypo”. The information in the jar will help emergency responders make a quicker diagnosis.

Include any other useful information, such as your contact number, ID number or passport number.

Lions have come up with a brilliant idea that could save lives and provide peace of mind for those who are alone during an emergency. The stickers are placed on the front door of the individual and on the refrigerator door to encourage first responders.

The Lions will launch the initiative on La Cala de Mijas, Wednesday, September 24 outside the La Cala Town Hall at the Charity Market, where you can pick up your message in a glass bottle for free, though a small contribution is appreciated to cover expenses. The bottles will be available in the Lions shop.

La Cala Lions extend their thanks to Avalon Funeral Plans Jigsaw Printers Bridge and Costa Connection who sponsored the launch. Anne can be contacted on 607879450 for more information or to inquire about sponsorship.
