Jose Mourinho has returned to the place where it all began at age 62. Announced earlier this week as Benfica’s new head coach, The Special One made his return to Portuguese football with a statement victory: a 3–0 win away to AVS Futebol SAD on Saturday.
The match at the Estádio do Clube Desportivo das Aves started with early drama, a Benfica goal ruled out inside the first quarter of an hour. The control of the match was never truly lost. Heorhiy sudakov, a Ukrainian midfielder, scored a goal in stoppage-time just before the half. Vangelis Pavlidis scored from the penalty spot after the break in the 59th and 60th minutes. Franjo ivanovic then sealed the victory five minutes later by latching on to a pass made by the Greek forward.
Mourinho’s last time in the Benfica dugout was 25 years ago. He has also managed clubs in Portugal for over two decades. Bruno Lage was dismissed following a week of poor results, including a Champions League defeat to Qarabag as well as a draw in the domestic league against Santa Clara.
Benfica is now second in the Primeira Liga, with 13 points. Porto leads the league with 18. AVS falls to the bottom half of the table.
Mourinho has already become a legend in football. From his first stint with Benfica, back in 2000, to Champions League glory at Porto and Premier League titles at Chelsea, as well as a career that took him around the globe, Mourinho is a story of success. He’s now writing a new chapter in Lisbon.
