The awards were presented by Jorge Roman, the director of NGO Paraocio. This was a positive step towards a more inclusive Benalmadena.

The ‘Benalmádena Accesible’ scheme promotes inclusion for those with functional diversity by recognising businesses and institutions facilitating accessibility for everyone. The campaign was launched in August when the Palacio de los Deportes won the first award for its fully-compliant facilities. These included ramps, lifts and toilets with accessible features.

The second plaque was also awarded to iHomes in September. Benalmadena Council is funding the initiative, which will distribute 30 acrylic plaques before December 30. The featured businesses will include www.ongparaocio.orgAlong with discounts for those with disabilities, this will help to create a more welcoming community.

Benalmadena’s coastal accessibility with four adapted beach like Carvajal adds to Spain’s leadership in European tourism, which has over 600 adapted sandy beaches. Benalmadena is not as accessible to transport as urban areas like Malaga. Spain’s urban accessibility is on par with Germany and The Netherlands, but it lags behind in terms of rural consistency.
