The Malaga Province is in for a dramatic change in the weather as a powerful DANA (isolated, high-altitude Depression) heads south. It will bring intense storms and possible hail along with a significant drop in temperature starting Sunday, August 24.
Weather instability is about to replace the warm, sunny days of August. This could have a significant impact on day-today activities in the region.
The DANA is a storm that comes from France, enters through the Pyrenees and is driven by seasonal changes in atmospheric circulation over the North Atlantic. This is due to the change of Hurricane Erin, which has become an extratropical hurricane. AEMET warns that this weather system is “potentially dangerous”, as scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected, especially in eastern Spain. This includes mountainous areas, and parts Balearic Islands, like Mallorca.
Malaga under yellow storm warning
Malaga Province may not be on the highest alert level, but the threat of heavy rains and gusty wind is still present, particularly in coastal and inland regions. Recent examples of extreme weather in other parts of Spain show the severity of the front that is coming. In Ontinyent in Valencia, hailstorms dumped up to 30 litres on a square metre of land in just a few seconds, damaging cars and houses. Agres in Alicante saw almost 60 litres in 45 minutes.
Residents are advised to keep up-to-date with weather reports, to avoid unnecessary traveling during storms or heavy rain, and to prepare themselves for sudden changes. Be careful where you park your car and don’t leave it in the path of flooding water.
