Northern parts of UK brace themselves for a powerful blast unseasonal weather. Storm Floris Rolls in on Monday, 4 August with wind speeds up to 90mph in exposed area.

Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England. The worst effects are expected on Monday, August 4 into early Tuesday morning, August 5.

Storm Floris reaches 85mph

According to the Met OfficeFloris is expected to bring “a spell unusually windy for this time of year in the northern half” of the UK. While inland areas may see gusts of 40–50mph, more exposed coasts and high ground could experience gusts of 60–70mph, with potential peaks of 85mph in the worst-hit spots.

The winds will subside by Tuesday morning. Heavy rain could also cause problems in certain areas.

The Met Office warns of “injuries or danger to life” from flying debris. Large waves can also pose a risk to people near beaches and seafronts.

Additional impacts may include:

  • Buildings with minor damage caused by tiles falling from roofs
  • Electricity cuts could impact mobile phone coverage as well as other services
  • Road, rail, ferry, and air travel delays or cancellations
  • Closed roads and bridges
  • Coastal flooding, and the danger of beach material being thrown into the inland

Met Office warns against taking unnecessary precautions Then, The storm has hit:

  • Secure loose items outdoors
  • Check for delays and cancellations before you travel.
  • Charge devices and prepare for power failures by assembling batteries, torches, and chargers
  • Keep your dog on a lead and away from coastal paths.

Met Office warns: “Even if you are standing on the shore, large waves can carry you out to sea.” The yellow alert is a warning of a moderate impact event. Conditions can change rapidly, as they always do with UK weather alerts. Met Office encourages people to monitor official forecasts at the weekend in order to stay informed.
