From Thursday, August 21 to Sunday, August 24, the town of Teba will celebrate the XIX Douglas’ Days, an event celebrating the rich historical and cultural ties that exist between Teba, Scotland, and its people. This festival has become a benchmark in the tourism industry for its uniqueness. It will once again be centered around the historic union between Teba and Melrose, two towns that are united by Sir James Douglas’ legacy.
In addition to a daily medieval market, the program of activities will feature a series cultural, recreational, and educational events, highlighting the battle of Teba, one of history’s most epic stories. Sir James Douglas was also known as Black Douglas. He fought for and died in this battle, which took place in 1330, to take Estrella Castle away from Emir Muhammed IV. Douglas, who fought in the Holy Land under the command King Alfonso XI was on his journey with the embalmed Robert the Bruce’s heart. The documentary, James Douglas, the man with two hearts, a film that delves into this fascinating historical episode, will be screened in Plaza de España at 8.30pm on Saturday.
The event will focus on historic sites such as the castle where the battle occurred and the centre of town where James Douglas and Robert the Bruce are both commemorated by a plaque.
There are many activities that create a medieval atmosphere in the city, including street theatres, workshops, and music and dance performances.
The City of Inverness Youth Pipe Band and Lesley Thomson of the Sur Pipes Band on the Costa del Sol will perform traditional Scottish bagpipes music. Mardanis – a Sephardic vocal instrumental group – and The Stolen Notes – a Celtic folk group – will also perform.
