Escape the heat to rejuvenating Roman baths where Julius Caesar once bathed

Roman Baths, where Julius Caesar bathed, are a rejuvenated way to escape the heat

As summer brings an influx of visitors to the Baños de la Hedionda in Casares, the historic Roman natural baths in Casares, the local council has introduced a free reservation system to manage access during peak daytime hours.

This measure aims to limit the number of people who enter the iconic dome structure and preserve its architectural and historic value.

It is said that Santiago was expelled from the waters of this lake and that the devil breathed his last breath here. The popular imagination uses this legend to explain the sulphur smell from the water. Known as Baños de la Hedionda, the baths constitute one of the historical landmarks of the Utrera massif and, in general, of all Casares.

Since Roman times, man has enjoyed the benefits of these Ferruginous Sulphurous Baths. Julius Caesar is said to have bathed in these waters for his war injuries. The enclosure of the spa is right on the banks of the Albarrán stream and very close to the border with the municipality of Manilva.

Eventbrite allows you to make reservations, for free, for the months of August and Septembre. Booking links are available through the official channels. This initiative is designed to protect the site known for its unique combination of natural beauty, cultural heritage and historical significance.

Visitors are asked to refrain from removing the mud from baths. Authorities say that although the water has therapeutic properties, removing the mud from the baths causes intentional harm to the location. The council said that “taking mud damages the environmental”, and urged visitors to preserve this beloved location.

Casares Town Hall is grateful to the public for their cooperation in conserving this unique historical and environmental treasure. Visit the Eventbrite pages for more details or to make a booking.
