UZ Brussel is a hospital located in Brussels that has performed more than 100 robot-assisted bypasses of the coronary arteries. This is a notable achievement in robotic surgery.
These surgeries were likely performed using advanced robotic systems, similar to the Da Vinci Surgical System. This system is known for its precision and minimally invasive techniques, such as coronary artery by-pass surgeries. This cutting-edge procedure can be used by individuals who experience painful limb swelling as a result of cancer treatment, such as breast and prostate surgery.
“The Symani robot is a major milestone in the evolution of cosmetic surgery.” We are proud that UZ Brussel is now the global leader in robotic lymphatic procedures. Prof. Dr. Moustapha Hmdi, head of the Department of Plastic Surgery, said:
Underestimated but serious condition
The professor stated that lymphedema is a condition that is often under-appreciated and can have a severe impact on quality of life. The lymphatic system can be disrupted by surgery to remove lymph nodes for cancer treatment. This causes swelling, discomfort and decreased mobility.
“Lymphedema remains a taboo topic.” Cancer survivors told to be thankful they are alive and to learn to live with a swollen leg for the rest their lives, said Prof. Dr. Alexanderu Nistor.
Nistor continued, “For many, this is worse than the cancer that they survived because it sticks with them and reminds of their ordeal every day.” We can now intervene much earlier with robotic microsurgery and dramatically improve their quality-of-life.
‘They leave smiling’
Nistor stated that he, along with his team, have been performing most procedures under local sedation since 2024.
“Patients lie comfortably on the operating table, watch the surgery on a TV screen—like a cinema—and we explain what’s happening,” Nistor said. “We laugh and talk. They leave with a smile, with visible swelling.
Patients seeking diagnosis, second opinions, or advanced surgical treatment for lymphedema—whether primary or secondary—can now benefit from the world’s most experienced robotic microsurgery team.
