It is amazing to see the cultural impact that concepts imported from the United States have on the culture of the rest of the world. Roller skates for work, for one. What about shopping?
Since many years, employees have glided on roller skates through the aisles of larger Spanish hypermarkets such as Alcampo or Carrefour to check a price. Carrefour has invited their customers to wear roller skates as well.
Roller-Hour was launched by the leading hypermarket in Spain. This unique initiative allows customers to do their shopping while roller-skating. From 4.30pm to 5:30pm daily until August 31st, the Roller Experience is available in all 204 Carrefour Hypermarkets across Spain and Malaga Province. Customers can now put their shopping carts on rollers, reliving the iconic past of the Carrefour chain in a fun, different and summery way.
Elodie Perauisot, Carrefour Spain executive director, said, “With Roller-Hour, Carrefour is reviving the recognisable images from its origins in Spain, to show how hypermarkets are still able to set trends.” “We are reasserting the hypermarket’s role as a place that is fun, exciting and connects all generations.
The sessions were also created in response to nostalgic comments made on social media about Carrefour roller-skaters, including “I wanted to join them.” The company is Spain’s largest hypermarket chain and controls over 40% of the market. With those figures, I hope they also have a solid insurance policy.
