Lionel Messi, his Inter Miami teammate Jordi Alba and their decision to not play in the Major League All-Star Game earlier this week resulted in them being banned from playing against FC Cincinnati.

Inter Miami’s co-owner Jorge Mas said Messi was “extremely disappointed” by the one-game ban, which an official of the team called “draconian.” according ESPN.

Mas, speaking to reporters Friday, said: “Lionel Messi, as we are all in the club, is very upset that they will not be able play tomorrow night.” “But what I think we as a team have to do is get together, and have an attitude of us against the rest of the world.”

The MLS Statement

Messi and Alba won’t be available for Saturday’s match against MLS Eastern Conference leader FC Cincinnati, because MLS rules stipulate that players who do not take part in the All-Star Game with prior approval from the league are ineligible for their club’s subsequent match.

“According to league rules any player who doesn’t participate in the All-Star Game, without prior approval from league, is ineligible to play in their next match,” MLS announced in a statement Friday is a holiday.

Don Garber, the MLS commissioner said that he knew Lionel Messi loved this league. I don’t think there’s a player – or anyone – who has done more for Major League Soccer than Messi. I admire, respect and fully understand his commitment to Inter Miami and I respect his choice.”

Garber did explain that the US League has had a policy for a long time regarding participation in All-Star Game. “We were forced to enforce it. It was a difficult decision.”

The rule is being reviewed

Garber ended his statement with a positive for Messi by saying that the MLS “would take a close look at its policy going forward.” I am committed to working with players to determine the best way to evolve this rule.

Mas stated that he believed “the punishment for breaking the rule is draconian.” Mas said. “It was clear that it wasn’t a positive response.” [from Messi and Alba]. They want competition, they love to play games. It’s their goal to win and play. They know the significance of Saturday (July 26th’s) game.”

Mas said that Jordi and Messi’s reaction wasn’t surprising. They don’t get it.
