Imagine not having to call your dry cleaners or pet groomers again. Google has just rolled out a new feature that lets its artificial intelligence make calls on your behalf, gathering prices and availability so you don’t have to lift a finger—or deal with the dreaded hold music.
Google Search has a handy update that was announced this week. It is now available for all US users and promises to transform the way small businesses are contacted.
How does Google AI call work?
Here’s how it plays out: Search for a business—say, your local auto shop or a trusted pet groomer—and you might spot a new option underneath the business listing: ‘Have AI check pricing’. Tap it, and Google’s AI will walk you through a quick Q&A, asking for details like what service you’re after, your pet’s breed, or your preferred dates and how you’d like to get an answer (text or email, for example).
Google’s AI powered by the latest Gemini or Duplex models will call your business after you share your contact information. Importantly, the AI will always introduce itself as a digital assistant calling on your behalf—no sneaky robot tricks here. It will send you a summary of the information it has gathered to your phone so you don’t have to make the call.
Who will benefit most from Google AI’s phone calls?
It’s early days, and the tool is only available for certain business types—think pet groomers, dry cleaners, and mechanics. This feature is already obvious to those who may love it. Google’s research confirms something many of us know already: younger generations dread making phone calls. It could be a game-changer for people with social anxiety or busy schedules.
It’s not only the customers that need to adapt. Local businesses have the option to opt out if they prefer to remain human. But for those that are willing to cooperate, AI could streamline communication and reduce missed phone calls.
AI Pro and AI Ultra features: premium features and more muscle
Sign up for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra to get higher monthly usage limits. This allows you to let AI do more for you. Google will also be releasing the new Gemini 2.5 Pro in an experimental AI Mode. This one’s especially clever at advanced tasks—reasoning, maths, and even coding.
But the improvements don’t stop here. Google has been experimenting with Deep Search. This feature allows users to ask for in-depth reports that include multiple steps about any topic. AI creates its own answers, rather than just providing a quick answer. Google Labs is only offering it to its premium subscribers for now. But it’s an indication of what search technology will look like in the future.
Google’s AI will revolutionize everyday life
Google’s AI tool for phone calls might seem like an incremental step, yet it is a preview of a larger shift. We may soon put an end to the endless hold music and repeating ourselves to customer service agents, as well as forgetting to ask a crucial question. AI could save millions of people hours every week as it takes over the mundane admin.
There are also questions. Some people are worried about their privacy or what would happen if something went wrong. Not every business owner likes the idea of speaking to a robot instead of a customer. For now, Google says it’s putting transparency first, always announcing that a call is being made by AI—and letting businesses opt out if they prefer.
Google leads the way in AI-powered calls, whether you welcome it or prefer a personal touch. If you’re in the US, it’s time to give it a whirl—you might never dial a local business again.
