Liverpool retires Diogo Jota’s No. 20 shirt following tragic car accident death in Spain

LIVERPOOL has permanently retired the No.20 shirt to honour Diogo Jota, who was killed last week in a car accident in northern Spain.

The 28 year old and his brother Andre Silva died after their Lamborghini, which they were traveling in, suffered a suspected tyre rupture on the A52 near Palacios de Sanabria (Zamora) in the early hours 3 July.

Liverpool made an announcement on Friday at 20:20 BST, announcing that the No.20 shirt, which was used in both women’s teams and academy levels, would be discontinued.

In a press release, the club stated: “After consultations with his family and wife Rute, the club is able to announce the squad numbers will be retired across all levels including LFC Women and Academy in honor and memory of Diogo.

“This move recognizes not only his immeasurable contribution to the Reds’ on-pitch victories over the last five seasons, but also his profound impact on teammates, colleagues, and supporters as well as the everlasting relationships he developed with them.

“The shock and grief of his passing will continue to be felt for a long time to come and the club stands alongside and sends love to Rute, his three children, his parents and the rest of his – and Andre’s – family and friends.”

Jota died only eleven days after marrying Rute, a long-term lover. He had made 182 appearances across all competitions with Liverpool.

Jota, his brother and their parents drove to Santander in order to catch a ferry to return to the UK before pre-season. His doctor had advised him not to fly after recent lung surgery.

Guardia Civil stated on Tuesday that the evidence showed Jota to be the driver at the time when the incident occurred. It is believed to have taken place as the Lamborghini was trying to overtake a vehicle.

“All signs also point to a possible speeding beyond the limit on the highway,” added the local traffic police.

The investigation continues.
