Sport: Nerja-based world-record-breaking freediver descends 117m while holding his breath

Davide Carrera (an Italian freediver who lives in Nerja in the east of Costa del Sol) has broken the record for freediving by descending 117 meters at the Vertical Blue competition, the most prestigious event in this extreme sports, taking place in The Bahamas.

Carrera is a world-renowned freediving figure. He was born 1975 in Turin. He has lived in Malaga for many years, and trains at Nerja’s El Playazo Beach.

Carrera trains freedivers from around the world. Since decades, he has dived to the bottom of the ocean without using a diving tank. “It’s the natural way to do it,” he said.
