La Cala de Mijas Lion Wynson Beswick had a dream. She spent years with horses and her stables in Cornwall and when she moved to La Cala, she wanted young disabled riders to experience the joy, love and therapeutic benefit of being with horses.
A few years ago, the Equine School for Disabled welcomed her warmly. They needed to find a horse that was bigger for several small riders so the instructor could be with them.
Rosemary was the name of the large horse that was purchased by the Lions for the School. She was an enormous success. Recent Lions provided an orthopaedic seat for young riders with severe spine disabilities.
Elena, a 17-year old girl with cerebral palsy was the first one to try it. Since she was two years old, Elena has attended the school. We only had to look at her smile to know that she would benefit. The saddle would now hold her securely without her teachers having to maintain the correct position. The back of the seat swayed back and forth as if she were riding without assistance.
The school has over 40 students ranging in age from 2 to 20. “20 of them will benefit from the use of the saddle, “explained Virginia and Flavio – the husband and wife team who generously give up their time to run the school. The Lions were warmly thanked but as David Kaye, the New President for the La Cala Lions explained “this is what we raise funds for – to help those in need. It’s a team effort. “We are grateful to everyone who supports our events.”
When we left school, did we hear Rosemary whinny her approval? Yes, we think so!
