MOT data reveals thousands of cars in Madrid failing safety checks – and the main culprits might surprise you

Tires, lights, and emissions: the three biggest MOT failures this summer

Don’t forget to check your car before you leave for Spain or Madrid. A new report from the Madrid Association of Vehicle Technical Inspection Companies reveals an unpleasant truth. Nearly half of vehicles tested at the ITV in Spain (Spain’s MOT equivalent), are lacking in certain areas.

Let’s break this down. In May alone, over 204,000 vehicles underwent inspection – almost 10% more than last year. More than 16% of vehicles failed the inspection on the first try, while a staggering 19% had serious problems with the axles, wheels or suspension. Then, add to this the 27% who failed on lighting and signalling and you can see that your next road trip may be derailed by an old tyre.

Why heat can make tyres ticking timebombs

The test is not the only thing that matters. AEMA ITV has warned about the summer heat and its impact on rubber. High temperatures can cause your tyres to lose pressure and the tread to wear down much faster – up to 15% reduction in tyre life, say the experts. You’re more likely to suffer a puncture or blowout on long hot trips.

The advice? Do not just go with the flow. Keep an eye on cracks, bulges and excessive wear. Check the tyres regularly, before you leave, not half way to Alicante. A quick visit to your local garage for a pre-holiday check-up could save you hours stranded on the hard shoulder – or worse.

ITV isn’t just a nuisance – It’s your summer lifesaver

The ITV is not just another piece of Spanish red-tape. It has a purpose. Last month, brakes were the fourth-most common reason for failing inspections. More than 7% of cars failed due to worn or faulty parts. And with 30% of failures down to excessive emissions, it’s not just your wallet at risk – it’s the environment too.

You have a lot of choice in Madrid with over 70 test centres. It’s also worth knowing that you can have your car inspected up to 30 calendar days before the due date of your ITV without losing its validity. Why wait to the last minute or worse until your car is no longer roadworthy?

Do not let minor problems ruin your adventure

As Jorge Soriano, president of AEMA-ITV, puts it: “The technical inspection isn’t just a legal formality – it’s a fundamental step to make sure your car’s fit for summer travel, especially with high temperatures and long journeys ahead.”

Make your pre-trip check list count before you load up the family for a road trip. Tyres, lights, brakes, emissions – a few minutes’ attention could make the difference between a dream getaway and a roadside nightmare. Happy travels, and don’t let a simple oversight spoil your Operación Salida!
