Orihuela ramps up surveillance tech

Orihuela Council has launched an tender for the purchase of a modern intelligent video surveillance system that will enhance security in the entire town.

The plan, part of the first phase of a broader technological security project, carries a budget of €280 thousand and targets 30 key locations, primarily in rural districts and Orihuela Costa. Areas such as La Aparecida, Arneva, Raiguero de Bonanza, Camino de Beniel, Camino Viejo de Callosa, La Campaneta, Correntías Altas, Correntías Medias, Molins, La Murada, Parroquia de La Matanza, San Bartolomé, Torremendo, and strategic points in Orihuela Costa were selected based on police reports highlighting a higher rate of crime, misdemeanours, and anti-social behaviour.

The system includes advanced features such as licence plate recognition, context cameras and GPS tracking, which allow police to track and verify vehicles that are involved in crimes and their presence in specific locations. This technology is not only a powerful deterrent but it also speeds up investigations. The contract includes the installation of a new control center with a videowall, servers, network electronic, cabling and licenses. All are connected by a secure fiber-optic network to allow for real-time monitoring.

The tech will also be able address issues such as illegal dumping and unauthorised waste disposal. It can also help to improve order and cleanliness. One councillor said, “This is all about safety and coexistence.”

The project’s six-month implementation period guarantees that equipment will be replaced and maintained at no additional cost. Orihuela is not included in this expansion phase as it already has surveillance systems installed. The project, with a planned investment of over €1 million, hopes to eventually cover the entire municipality.
