Things are about to get toasty in the municipality of Vícar — and no, it’s not the heat. The area is betting on breakfast with the launch of its first-ever ‘Ruta de la Tostada’ (Toast Route), a gastronomic initiative celebrating one of the region’s most beloved moments of the day.

Running from 1 to 31 July, the event invites locals and visitors alike to explore a diverse selection of toasted breakfast offerings across 26 participating cafés and bars throughout the town. Who knew that choosing what to put on toast would be such a challenge?

Organised by the local council, the initiative aims to promote Vícar’s hospitality sector and encourage morning tourism during the summer season. From traditional toppings like tomato and olive oil to more creative and modern twists, the route highlights the versatility of the humble tostada and its place in Andalucían food culture.

Participants can collect a card with a route to each establishment and give it a rating. The completed cards will be entered in a prize drawing at the end each month (hopefully, not for an entire year’s worth of bread). The location with the highest rating will receive special recognition by the town.

Vícar’s mayor, Antonio Bonilla, described the route as “a tasty way to support local businesses and celebrate a tradition that brings people together each morning.”
