ADINTRE’s Joyce seeks help for those who need it most

ADINTRE’s Joyce offers help to those who are in need

A young couple, in desperation on Thursday, 26th June, enters the ADINTRE center in Fuengirola run by Joyce Gyimah, BEM.

They are in need of food and assistance. They have no other place to go. As in hundreds of cases similar to this on the Costa del Sol they were just evicted due to non-payment of rental after the man who was in the relationship hadn’t been paid in 5 months for the construction project that he had been working on in Marbella. He is 5 months along with his partner and they are going to have to spend the first night of their lives sleeping on the street tonight.

ADINTRE deals with a growing number of cases every day. They were victims of circumstance, who, by no fault of theirs, had lost everything. At this time of year the market dictates prices for the many modest guesthouses that line the coast. Prices are now out of reach of most people.

For a quarter of a century, Joyce Gyimah BEM has given over her life to doing all and everything she can to pick people up in similar situations, and put them back on their feet – giving people a second chance at life – starting, all-importantly, with a lovingly cooked square meal.

On Wednesday, June 25, Joyce was present at the Festival Soles de Málaga cheque presentation ceremony which demonstrated that benevolence knows no limits on the Costa del Sol. The organisation managed to raise more than €155,000 for 11 Malaga-based NGOs that fight against poverty and social exclusion. The festival which raised the money brought together over 3,000 people with the hashtag #ParaLuchaAyuda. This demonstrated that Malaga’s generosity knows no bounds when it unites.

Of that €155,000, about €9,000 corresponds to ADINTRE. The €9,000 will go a long way, but not all the way to be able to contract a much needed full-time psychologist. Losing everything – becoming destitute – cast aside by society – is emotionally and psychologically devastating. When your pride and confidence are wiped out, it is impossible to “just go and get a job”. This is what being on the street does to people. ADINTRE needs a psychologist urgently.

A full-time psychologist would cost the organisation €2,800 per month. A volunteer psychologist is currently providing an hour and half of support five days a weeks. Joyce said that she does a fantastic job. But more is needed. If ADINTRE could get a part time one, it would be able to help people get back on their feet.

ADINTRE’s current work involves visiting the elderly, especially those who are living alone. They offer to help them, drive them to doctors’ appointments and other important events, and deliver a nutritious meal when needed.

Donations will be gratefully received at CUENTA DE UNICAJA: 2103 0135 72 0030016203 a nombre de Asociación ADINTRE, IBAN: ES3621030135720030016203, BIC/SWIFT: UCJAES2MXXX.

Many people are helping out, but there is still much to do. The Rotary Club of Marbella is holding a charity gala dinner and golf tournament on 18th July to raise the most money possible for Joyce. Tickets for the magical event at Finca La Concepción are available from info@rotaryclubmarbell.es or WhatsApp (+34) 610 080 442.
