Malaga’s export boom flies in face of global threats

Malaga export boom ignores global threats

Malaga exports are booming despite global economic turmoil and geopolitical tensions including war potential.

Despite tariffs, supply chain delays, workers shortages, property prices going through the roof, and the bemoaning of a plethora of other economic threats, businesses in Malaga have achieved a historic landmark – exporting goods and services worth €1.125 billion from January to April 2025, a 1.9 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, and more than ever before. The amount marks a new record for the province, according to data from Andalucía TRADE, a regional government agency.

Malaga has shown remarkable resilience. In a global economy that has been impacted by Donald Trump and his tariffs as well as the conflicts going on around the world, Malaga companies have proven to be resilient. The province’s exports in the first four months of 2025 already account for over a third of the €3.272 billion recorded for the entirety of 2024.

Malaga exports its products to which countries?

Malaga’s exports are dominated by 1,084 companies, while many more engage in international sales occasionally. Malaga’s export economy is based on the agro-food industry, despite challenges local farmers face and fierce competition from abroad. Key exports include fruits (€197 million, up 14.4 per cent), olive oil (€141 million), tech products (€57 million), and cosmetics and perfumery (€51 million).

Europe continues to be the most important market because of its proximity, shared history, tastes, and common currency. Italy (€154 million), France (€153 million), and Portugal (€146 million) were the most loyal customers for Malaga’s exports in the first four months of 2025.

The province is still attractive to the world, as its products are sold in 151 countries. This includes the United States of America, Germany, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Belgium and Morocco.

Malaga exports close the trade deficit

Malaga has a negative trade balance despite export success. Imports continue to be higher than exports. From January to March 2025, imports totalled €954 million compared to €842 million in exports, revealing the province’s high demand for foreign goods, but the numbers are beginning to even out.
