Mijas council has approved a budget during its latest plenary session, setting aside over €1 million to bolster the municipality’s security and emergency services.
The massive investment is expected to strengthen local police, fire services, and civil protection in order to address complaints about a long-standing shortage and improve operational capability.
The funds will go towards the purchase of body cameras and new breathalyzers, as well as surveillance drones, road signalling systems for public roads, and improvements to the police firing range. The funds will also be used to maintain security systems at municipal buildings, and improve the ventilation system of the police headquarters garage.
In addition, the budget includes funds for new uniforms and specialized supplies, as well as improvements to standard weapons, ammunition and training. Equipment previously approved, including new motorcycles and bulletproof vests as well as a communication center with updated IT systems and a communication centre, will also be arriving soon to increase police safety and efficiency.
Financial boost for fire brigade and civil protection
Francisco Jerez expressed his gratitude to the council for its support. He also highlighted that targeted investments will benefit these services. Jerez noted that “it’s been years” since the last time we saw real investments at this level. The Fire Brigade will acquire new intervention helmets and personal protective equipment (PPE) and start up a €150,000 technical project for a new fire station facility. He added that “these resources not only improve safety for our professionals, but also make a city better equipped to handle any emergency.”
Civil Protection will receive almost €200,000 to improve its operational and emergency response capabilities. Upgrades include medical supplies, equipment for emergency interventions, road safety gear and high-pressure systems repairs. They also include the modernisation and upgrading of motorcycles, a logistic support vehicle and motorcycles. The package also includes a new drone to be used for search and rescue operations as well as emergency support.
Along with urban safety, the council addresses rural concerns. Mijas recently submitted a request to the Andalusian Regional Government for repairs to three rural roads, Camino de Entrerríos, Camino de la Alquería, and Camino de la Fuente del Algarrobo, all severely damaged by heavy rainfall.
The council underlined that the initiative is part a long-term plan prioritising public service and safety. It also aims to improve municipal resources continuously. The council concluded that “this investment directly translates to a more protected Mijas”.
