Estepona began a full refurbishment of its municipal archaeological Museum in the historic Casa del Aljibe on Plaza Blas de Infante. The project is expected to double the museum’s exhibition space. This will enable dozens of prehistoric and Roman artifacts, as well as Islamic ones, to be displayed in the first place.
Many of these items were kept in storage until now due to lack of space. The upper floor will have new galleries that are opened up by removing partitions to make more space for exhibitions.
Plan also includes an upgrade to the carpentry, new flooring and a lift that will make the area more accessible. The Arabic cistern named after the building will be visible behind a protective glass.
The building was constructed in the 18th Century over an old water tank.
The museum, which opened 10 years ago, houses some of Estepona’s most important archeological finds. The town hall wants to make these pieces accessible to the public and give them a permanent home.
Budget is just under 100,000 Euros. The project should take six months. Once completed, the museum’s cultural offerings will be much more rich for both residents and visitors.
