Expert warns ‘it’s a disgrace that squatting is great business’ as scourge rises 7% in Spain

Squatting continues to increase throughout Spain. In all cases, it increased by 7% last year.

It’s shocking that, in many cases it is not illegal because there was an agreement involved.

It means that the tenant can continue to live in the house even after their rental agreement has ended.

This practice is called inquiokupacion. This implies that at a legal-level, it’s an occupation. Therefore, eviction will be required for non-payment in order to evict the Inquiokupas.

Many of these people are able to make demands and even dangerous threats. This causes fear among owners who feel threatened physically as well as being clearly hurt economically. 

Experts from the Barcelona University of Economics have spoken out about the debate over how to deal effectively with squatting.

Gonzalo Bernardos stated that “squatting is an amazing business”. 

It’s a shame that owners cannot evict squatters, and they also have to pay their electricity and water bills.

Bernardos said that the PP political party has a better stance on squatting than the PSOE, but he said that ‘it pays more to be a squatter than to have your own home’.
