Age in Spain, the national nonprofit supporting older English speakers, has launched a €3,500 fundraising campaign to sustain its Friendline telephone companionship service.

Friendline, a free weekly call service that provides emotional support to older expatriates and companionship is described as a “lifeline” and a “safe space”. Mavis, an experienced user, said, “It is like having an older friend now,” when she found help with residency papers.

Rob, who has been an expat in the UK since 2014, calls the chats “brainfood,” as they help ease mental and physical struggles. Marilyn, an animal foster carer who lives remotely, says Friendline offers motivation and a boost that are often missing from her local community. She stresses the importance of long-term support for expats: “When you are older, you can struggle. A link is essential.”

Age in Spain is a conversation and care initiative for the elderly. Isolated people are those who have spent a long time in Spain, or who have achieved a high level of education. Spanish fluency. With €3,500, Friendline can continue fostering connections. Mavis says, “You will need help at some point.”
