The 9th Annual United Nationalities of Marbella SummitThe event, which took place on 20 May 2025 in the Harbour Restaurant of Marbella, addressed the urgent issues that face elderly expats living on the Costa del Sol.

The 9th Annual United Nationalities of Marbella summit, hosted by Nicole King and held in May instead of November, was moved forward due to the urgent need to support the elderly population on the Costa del Sol.

Nicole ‘summed it up’ at the summit to representatives from Marbella and Mijas Town Halls, alongside Age Concern, Age Care, the Lions of La Cala de Mijas, and British consular officials, discussing solutions for the 60+ expat population.

The need to provide better care for older residents in Spain who want to stay home but cannot afford it was a key message. Kara Caradas, of Hadas Caradas Charity, moved the audience to tears by sharing her experience of loneliness in care homes for dementia patients, who are often forgotten or left behind by their families. The summit also focused on the burden of caregiving, highlighting the need for affordable home nursing services to relieve caregivers and to give them a few hours to rest or do other things. The summit proposed a weekly 24-hour break for caregivers to improve their mental state. A sense of ‘community’ is needed to ensure everyone else in the community is cared for.

The event called on businesses that profit from the elderly, to provide crucial resources. The event encouraged community involvement through initiatives such as “adopting” an elderly person and visiting care homes with schools. Support in Spain was endorsed by the group as a resource that should be updated and used to find services.
