Here we go: Ansu Fati heads to France and Barca’s rebuild begins

Ansu Fati is off to France, and Barca’s rebuilding begins

Ansu Fati, after another tough season at FC Barcelona is getting closer to a new opportunity that could revitalize his career.

The 22-year-old, once considered ‘the new Messi’ in Barcelona and valued at €80 million, experienced limited playing time under coach Hansi Flick. The 22-year-old played only 298 minutes during this campaign.

Ansu Fati’s new chapter at Monaco

Fabrizio Romao is quoted as saying: L’Équipe, the 22-year-old winger has already agreed to join AS Monaco on loan for the upcoming season — with the deal including an option to buy and a sell-on clause in favour of Barcelona.

Fati’s consistency and fitness have been a problem this season. He has only made six La Liga appearances. Now, he’s set for a fresh challenge in Ligue 1, as Monaco — who finished third and secured Champions League qualification — prepare to welcome him into Adi Hütter’s high-tempo system.

Fati, if the deal goes through, will be Monaco’s second summer signing after Eric Dier. Dier was signed on a free transfer from Bayern Munich. According to reports, the Spanish international is excited about the chance and the French team sees him as an exciting addition to their attacking options.

Barcelona wants two Monaco players

The relations between Barcelona and AS Monaco will not be just ‘one way’. According to Catalan media reports, the blaugrana team is planning to improve quality and depth at the flanks of the team this summer. They are looking to the French side for this.

Barcelona has been scouting Monaco’s own wingers, especially Ben Seghir and Maghnes Akliouche, both of whom impressed in Ligue 1 and reportedly caught the eye in the 2024 Trofeu Gamper, where Monaco stunned Barcelona 3–0.

  • Ben Seghir (20 year-old, Morocco): 46 matches, 9 goals, and 4 assists. Agile, unpredictable, lethal, and agile in one-on-1 situations.
  • Akliouche (22-year-old, France): 43 matches, 7 goals and 12 assists. A versatile and smart player who is equally effective on both wings.

Barcelona has been keeping an eye out for both players. They are bound to Monaco until 2027 and 2028, respectively. But their rapid growth puts them on the radar. Ansu’s loan from Monte Carlo to Barcelona could allow at least one to move in the other direction.

This loan agreement may seem routine, but could have a profound impact on Barcelona’s long-term and short-term wing strategy. Monaco is a great opportunity for Ansu Fati to regain confidence and form. Barcelona can use Monaco to update their offensive line and make room for potential new players.
