The Strait of Gibraltar has seen the first ever fully-electric boat cross from Sotogrande, Spain to Ceuta, in less than 60 minutes. The Candela C-8 developed by Swedish firm Candela became the first vessel to make an intercontinental journey without emitting any emissions.

The boat uses hydrofoils, which lift it off the water and reduce drag. It can therefore travel for long distances on battery power. Candela C-8, according to its manufacturers, consumes 90 percent less energy than traditional boats.

Per-Arne Hjelmborn was the Swedish ambassador to Spain and he was among the guests at the Sotogrande marina. Gustav Hasselskog (founder of Candela) and Manuel Gomez (CEO of Avangreen) were also on board. In Ceuta, the Port Authority, Chamber of Commerce of Ceuta, and others welcomed them.

A new solar power plant was also unveiled during the visit. In future, it is expected that the Candela can be powered with 100% renewable energy.

The crossing shows how electric boats offer a quick, affordable, and clean way to cross the Strait. The team behind Candela thinks that this technology could be used one day to support regular transportation between Europe and Africa. This would help reduce emissions and protect seas for future generations.
