Apple’s brain-control tech is coming — Cool, creepy, or both?

Apple wants you to be able to control your iPhone by using your thoughts. The tech giant is planning to launch a feature this year which will let users control their iPhones, iPads, or other devices by using brain signals. I’m serious– no touching, swiping, or even typing is required. The Wall Street Journal claims that this interface is not science fiction, but rather a reality fast approaching. What exactly is happening, how does this work, and are we excited or scared?

How will it work?

According to reports, the system will use sensors that are either integrated into or worn by devices to detect neural signals related to user intent. Apple’s version of the technology is seamless, external, polished, and allows users to navigate apps, type text messages, or scroll TikTok by using only their thoughts. Apple is pushing for accessibility, and this new technology will revolutionize how people use technology.

Big Technology is a leader in the race towards brain-computer interfaces (BCI). Apple has been working on these accessibility-focused tools for numerous years, including eye-tracking, voice control, and motion detection. This new feature builds upon its predecessors, offering a hands-free option that can benefit those with temporary or permanent injuries, people with motor impairments, and techies who want to live the future.

The cool, the creepy and the concerns

  • Cool aspects Accessibility would reach new heights. This could reduce the time spent on screens, and make interactions more deliberate. Apple Vision Pro will enable hands-free navigating in VR and AR.
  • The scary side Privacy becomes a nightmare and your phone will misunderstand a thought.
  • Genuine concern In Europe, there are strict laws on data privacy. Apple should tread lightly as the legal grey area for brain data is expanding.

Spain and EU are updating their laws on digital and AI. If this technology is mainstreamed, Brussels might raise some eyebrows. New regulations may be added.  Would you use it? Let’s not be shy. If it works it could revolutionize accessibility and interface capability, but if not it would be yet another creepy story of technology, next to the smart refrigerators that spy on their owners.

Apple’s brain control vision will be launched, but will start as an accessibility feature. It will then slowly expand to include our eyes, brains, and bodies. With all of its ongoing investigations and lawsuits, Apple faces problems in Europe. Apple can produce a shiny, innovative, slightly expensive technology that is both smooth and shiny. Is it dystopian enough for us to watch?
