New study published in Frontiers in psychology Explores the way people interpret their out-of body experiences (OBEs) to reveal what consciousness is.
Through interviews with 10 healthy adults who reported OBEs outside of near-death contexts, researchers uncovered recurring themes: vivid sensations, emotional clarity, and deep philosophical reflections – often more intense than waking life.
What are OBEs (out-of-body experience)?
People who experience an out-of body experience feel that their consciousness is separate from their physical form. The experiences are described by cultures all over the world and are dismissed as hallucinations, or neurological errors.
The study took place Thursday, 10 April 2025. Researchers from the Autonomous University of Barcelona conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with participants to get first-hand information. All participants were mentally healthy and ranged in age from 21-56. They had no neurological disorders. Most participants had only experienced one or a few OBEs, but three of them reported having been affected by OBEs regularly since childhood.
How did participants describe their experience of out-of body experiences?
While every account is unique, there are several patterns that emerged.
- Every participant said the OBE felt “real” – often more vivid than dreams or daily life.
- Many occurred while lying in bed or sitting quietly. One was triggered after an orgasm and another by the use of ketamine.
- Some people felt fear, particularly when they weren’t sure if their bodies would return. Some described feelings such as peace, curiosity, and even euphoria.
- Others “traveled” to unfamiliar cities, or saw places they had never seen before.
None of the witnesses saw this as a hallucination.
Empathy and the ego’s dissolution
Another study has been published. Reviews on Neuroscience, Biobehavioral Sciences Marina Weiler’s team at the University of Virginia, 2024 found that OBEs could also be a powerful way to increase empathy.
According to researchers and cited UVA HealthOBEs may trigger “ego dissolution” where people feel more detached from their bodies. The authors stated that the detachment with the physical body can lead to a greater sense of connectedness with life.
Some OBE experiencers report that they become more spiritual, peaceful and less fearful of death after their OBE. Others may even adopt prosocial behaviors long after the OBE has ended.
The University of Barcelona’s study is part of a growing body of evidence that suggests OBEs are not purely neurological accidents. In fact, they may provide important insights into consciousness and its possible extension beyond the brain.
Jenny Moix’s team and the lead author argue that to dismiss OBEs in a categorical manner risks ignoring critical aspects of human experiences. They urge future research.
