The Minister of Transport has selected the team that will conduct the Costa del Sol Train Viability Study.
The report will come from the engineering and consultancy firm UTE WSP Spain – Apia SAU.
It will cost €991,911 and take around 18 months, set to be completed by November next year.
As reported by Diario Sur a preliminary report will be released at the beginning of 2026.
The study is divided into five sections, from Nerja to Malaga; Malaga to Fuengirola; Fuengirola Marbella; Marbella Estepona and Estepona Algeciras.
The study will also examine how to improve the C1 Cercanias between Malaga-Fuengirola and possibly expand it westwards.
Oscar Puentes Minister of Transport said, “The viability analysis will consider demand, financial profitability, and socio-economic profitability.”
It is hoped the study will help developers make a ‘convenient’ decision, taking into account the ‘sizeable’ demand of the existing C1 line between Malaga and Fuengirola.
The option of building a new line to better serve the needs in densely populated areas like Estepona or Marbella is still available.
