May’s long ‘puente,’ thanks to Labour Day being on a Thursday, is approaching.
In Madrid and Tenerife, local celebrations on May 2 continue the May 1 bank holiday.
Many people in Spain plan mini-getaways for the weekend, or just enjoy a rare 4-day break. It is important to check which businesses and services will be open before leaving.
Which supermarkets will be open on May 1, 2018?
Dia will operate holiday hours (normally 10:00-14:30) in most locations, but some may choose to close completely.
Mercadona, Alcampo and other tourist areas will be closed on the first of May. However, a few outlets in popular tourist areas may open for a short time.
Carrefour has a split strategy: the large hypermarkets are often closed or have reduced hours while the smaller Carrefour Express shops, especially those in city centers and petrol stations, are usually open.
Will Banks Open on May 1?
No, they will not. On May 1, all banks in Spain and the majority of local government offices will be closed.
Banks will not reopen in regions such as Madrid, Canary Islands and Avila where the 2nd of May is also a public holiday until the 6th.
Banks will be reopened in other regions, such as Andalusia, and the majority of Spanish regions, on Friday the 3rd, before they close again for the weekend.
What do you think about schools?
All schools will be closed May 1, just like banks. All schools in Madrid, Canary Islands and Andalusia will be closed on May 2.
Check directly with the provider if your child attends after-school programs or uses childcare services. They often follow school calendars but not always.
What time are pharmacies open on Labour Day,
Every city and town has at minimum one “farmacia guardia”, a pharmacy that is on duty 24 hours a day.
Some pharmacies will also be open on holidays, but with reduced hours. Hospital emergency pharmacies are fully functional.
Will there be restaurants and bars open?
In general, yes. In general, yes. Some restaurants offer extended hours or special menus.
Small local bars and family-run establishments may take the day off if they are in a neighbourhood with less visitors.
Can I go to the gym May 1?
Most private gyms are open Thursday but on a reduced schedule, usually from 10:00 to 15:30. Municipal gyms and sport centres will usually close completely on Thursday, following the timetable of their local council.
Are shopping centres open?
It depends on the case. Most shopping centers have “holiday” hours, opening at midday and closing early in the evening. Food courts, cinemas and leisure zones are always busy. Smaller stores, however, may be closed. Check ahead.
What is the public transport schedule for May 1?
On May 1, public transport in Spain will run on holiday schedules. Bus and metro frequency will be lower than normal. Trains and flights for long distances operate as usual, but tickets can sell quickly.
